There are only a few things in this world that are more attractive than a well-groomed beard. If your beard is a little messy right now, don’t worry. We’re here to guide you through cleaning it up.
Beard styling is easy.
First, wash your beard with a gentle shampoo, such as baby shampoo. By doing this, you can clean your beard without endangering it or irritating your skin. Massage a conditioning lotion into the beard to nourish and soften it after rinsing the shampoo out. Your preferred conditioner could be anything from basic olive oil to branded beard conditioners and oils.
Bear in mind that beard hair is more difficult to soften because it is coarser than the hair on your head. To see results on a scruffy beard you’re gonna have to show it a little extra love by regularly conditioning it. To prevent flaking, be sure to thoroughly rinse the conditioner off afterward. After patting your beard dry with a towel, carefully comb it with a wide-toothed comb.
The next step in cleaning up your beard is trimming and grooming. We recommend visiting a barber for your first trim, just to get an idea of what to do in the future. Your barber will style your beard in a way that suits your face, which you can replicate when you start trimming at home.
Speaking of trimming at home, you’ll need to prepare the following items before your first solo trim:
- a wide-toothed comb
- a beard trimmer or pair of barber's scissors
- a razor
- a mirror with excellent lighting
Before you start, make sure your beard is dry because wet hair may hang down more and cause you to over-trim. For better symmetry, completely trim one side of your beard before you move to the next one. Start from just below your ear.
Trim the hair on the comb's outer edge while you gently comb your beard. While you get used to cutting, only trim small sections. If you cut it too much, you can't fix it; if you cut it too little, you can.
If you have hair growing past your jawline to your neck, shape the beard to your jawline and remove the hair beneath it. The excess hair may be shaved off with a razor. Make sure the area is well-lit, so you can clearly see what you're doing, and take your time in carefully shaving your neck to ensure you get the full gentleman look.
The last part of your grooming is trimming your mustache. Use your upper lip as a guide for this process. Trim the bottom strands of the mustache by using a downward comb. Cut off any hair that may be extending past your lip as you work your way from the middle of the mouth to the corners.
And just like that, your beard is in tip-top condition.
